Women in Japan - Calendar Project

May/June: Geisha.

Background: One of the most common misconceptions surrounding Japanese women is the notion that geisha are nothing more than dancing prostitutes. The word 'geisha' translates to mean 'person of the arts'. Geisha are highly trained artisans, skilled in areas of traditional dance, music and ceremony.

As a rule, geisha do not sleep with their clients, although in the past some were known to take lovers. Geisha were not courtesans, as they were free to choose whom they slept with and were able to deny others. The geisha of today make it a rule not to sleep with clients, and focus purely on their job, which is to entertain men with witty conversation and traditional arts.

This page has been crudely animated to show how the flap of her kimono folds back to reveal a No Entry sign based on New Zealand road signs. This page was going to be the gaudiest and tackiest, so I tried to play that aspect up with the gradient fills and bright colours~

First time trying to make art all in Adobe Illustrator. This style is referenced from Japanese candy wrappers I collected, and particularly from ~lounge-acting's work. Go visit and see how it's supposed to be done, haha :heart:

Once this totured soul had a name, but through years of revenge, gree, hate, retribution, and countless other things, that name was lost...

Wow, Im so glad someone else actually understnads that about Geisha! Theyve been misconstrued to the point where SOME people think wearing a chongsam makes them a geisha-look-alike (OMG LOL)
And so cute! Very funny touch to get your point across there miss. Well done, these are looking so great!

I wonder what kinda unique arts they perform coz I heard that it's really expensive to hire one.

Good job btw. Personally I think you're successful in pushing that Japanese flavour through. How much reference did you have to study/observe?
:iconguava:
Yeah, I've heard they're hellishly expensive. Especially considering you know you're not going to get any at the end of the night :XD:

I was looking at ~lounge-acting's images; [link] & [link] as reference. Mostly just how she drew the face (esp the mouth and eyes), the rest I just made up as I went along, keeping in mind the use of gradient fills I'd seen on candy boxes, and the flat colours. I was kind of stuck because I'd never tried vector/illustrator art before. I've usually always started off with a pencil or wacom sketch first, not just tried to draw with boxes and lines X3 but, it's all referenced in my workbook ^^;

oh, the kimono and kanzashi etc are all based on research i've done, but i wasn't actually drawing from ref for anything else, just memory. poor, poor memory X3

did i answer your question? haha.
